Executive Summary: A researcher needs to keep data synchronized when copies are kept on a campus resource and on another resource in the public research computing community.
The new Globus Timers feature provides a way to schedule repeating tasks, including synchronization tasks. This will enable this use case to be accomplished. Issue XCI-899 describes documentation XSEDE needs to deliver in order to explain how to do this. We estimate the documentation will require approximately two weeks of effort to write the documentation, test it for accuracy and clarity, and add it to the XSEDE website's data management page.
|Component||User facing?||Component’s role in the capability|
|Globus Connect Personal||yes||Researchers, educators, and others who have data on a desktop or laptop computer can install the Globus Connect Personal software to create a data transfer endpoint that can be used with Globus Transfer, XSEDE's managed data transfer service.|
|Globus Connect Server||no||Campus IT adminstrators can install the Globus Connect Server (GCS) software on campus storage systems (shared storage) to create a data transfer endpoint that can be used with Globus Transfer, XSEDE's managed data transfer service.|
|Globus Transfer||yes||The Globus Transfer service provides a managed data transfer service that enables researchers, educators, and others to request transfers between XSEDE resources and campus systems that have Globus Connect Server (GCS) or Globus Connect Personal (GCP) installed on them. Transfer tasks can use the "synchronize" option to synchronize the destination with the source. The Globus Timers feature allows scheduling a Transfer task to be repeated periodically.|
